Kia ora | Hello
We look forward to hosting you in our wonderful city. We begin with Māori welcome and explain the meaning behind the name Ōtautahi and Ōtakaro. Following the footsteps of our ancestors, we meander our way along the city laneways and river, sharing traditional Māori and Settler stories. Walking past traditional mahinga kai (food gathering) and pā (māori village) sites, Āmiki bring to life the stories of the past and present and how they have been woven into our emerging city including how we are kaitiaki (guardians) for the future. Our guides introduce our guiding principles of manaakitanga (hospitality) and whānaungatanga (connection) including sharing how important the act of sharing kai is for Māori and offer guests some iconic kiwi flavours and tastings. Visitors arrive as strangers and leave as friends.
